How to Play Chess: The Rules and Strategies You Need to Know

If you are new to chess or want to refresh your knowledge of the game, here are some basic rules and strategies that you need to know before playing chess with chess board mod apk:

The Initial Setup of the Chessboard and Pieces

The chessboard is a square board divided into 64 squares of alternating colors (light and dark). Each player has 16 pieces of six types: one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns. The pieces are arranged as follows:

  • The rooks are placed on the corners of the board, on the first and eighth ranks (rows).

  • The knights are placed next to the rooks, on the b and g files (columns).

  • The bishops are placed next to the knights, on the c and f files.

  • The queen is placed on the square of her own color, on the d file.

  • The king is placed on the remaining square, on the e file.

  • The pawns are placed on the second and seventh ranks, in front of the other pieces.

The player with the light-colored pieces (white) moves first, and then the players alternate turns. The goal of the game is to checkmate the opponent's king, which means to attack it with one or more pieces in such a way that it cannot escape, move, or be defended by another piece.

The Movement and Capture of the Chess Pieces

Each type of chess piece has a different way of moving and capturing on the board. Here are the basic rules for each piece:

  • The king can move one square in any direction (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally). It cannot move into a square that is attacked by an enemy piece. It can capture an enemy piece by moving into its square.

  • The queen can move any number of squares in any direction, as long as there is no piece of either color blocking her path. She can capture an enemy piece by moving into its square.

  • The rook can move any number of squares horizontally or vertically, as long as there is no piece of either color blocking its path. It can capture an enemy piece by moving into its square.

  • The bishop can move any number of squares diagonally, as long as there is no piece of either color blocking its path. It can capture an enemy piece by moving into its square.

  • The knight can move in an L-shaped pattern: two squares horizontally or vertically, followed by one square perpendicular to that direction. It can jump over other pieces of either color. It can capture an enemy piece by moving into its square.

  • The pawn can move one square forward (towards the enemy side) if the square is empty. On its first move, it can also move two squares forward if both squares are empty. It cannot move backwards or sideways. It can capture an enemy piece by moving one square diagonally forward (to the left or right) if the square is occupied by an enemy piece. It cannot capture a piece that is directly in front of it.

The Special Rules of Chess: Castling, En Passant, Promotion, and Checkmate

Besides the basic rules of movement and capture, there are some special rules that apply to certain situations in chess. Here are some of them:

  • Castling is a special move that allows the king and one of the rooks to move at the same time. It can only be done if neither the king nor the rook has moved before, if there are no pieces between them, and if the king is not in check or does not pass through or end up in a square that is attacked by an enemy piece. To castle, the king moves two squares towards the rook, and then the rook jumps over the king and lands on the square next to it. Castling can be done on either side of the board (kingside or queenside), depending on which rook is involved.

  • En passant is a special move that allows a pawn to capture an enemy pawn that has just moved two squares forward from its original position, bypassing the square where it could have been captured normally. It can only be done if the capturing pawn is on its fifth rank (the fourth rank for black), and if the enemy pawn has moved two squares forward on its first move, landing on an adjacent file to the capturing pawn. To perform en passant, the capturing pawn moves one square diagonally forward to the square where the enemy pawn would have been if it had moved only one square forward, and removes it from the board.

  • Promotion is a special move that allows a pawn to transform into another piece of its own color (except a king) when it reaches the eighth rank (the first rank for black). The player can choose any piece they want: a queen, a rook, a bishop, or a knight. The new piece replaces the pawn on the same square and can move and capture according to its rules.

  • Checkmate is a situation where one player's king is in check and cannot escape, move, or be defended by another piece. This means that the player who has checkmated the opponent's king has won the game. If the king is not in check but cannot make any legal move without putting itself in check, the game is a draw by stalemate. There are also other ways to end the game in a draw, such as by agreement, by repetition of moves, by insufficient material, or by the 50-move rule.
