Sahasra Siracheda Apoorva Chintamani: A Classic Telugu Novel

Sahasra Siracheda Apoorva Chintamani (సహస్ర శిరచ్ఛేద అపర్వ చితామణి) is a Telugu novel written by Naga Sri (నాగశ్రీ) and published in 1987. It is based on a Sanskrit work of the same name, which is attributed to the poet Kshemendra (10th-11th century CE). The novel is a fantasy adventure that narrates the quest of a prince to defeat an evil sorcerer and win the hand of a princess who beheads her suitors.

Plot Summary

The novel begins with the introduction of Princess Chintamani (చితామణి), the daughter of King Vikramaditya (విక్రమాదిత్య) of Ujjain (ఉజ్jain). She is a beautiful and intelligent woman, who has mastered various arts and sciences. She is also a devotee of Lord Shiva (శీౖ) and performs penance to please him. One day, she receives a boon from Shiva that she will marry a man who is equal to her in all respects. However, she also falls under the influence of an evil sorcerer named Mayasura ( మ య స ర), who poses as her guru and tricks her into making a vow that she will not do anything without his consent. Mayasura's motive is to use Chintamani as a tool to attain supreme power by beheading 1000 men.

Mayasura advises Chintamani to hold a test for her suitors, in which they have to answer three questions posed by her. The questions are:

  • What is the most wonderful thing in the world?

  • What is the most difficult thing in the world?

  • What is the most precious thing in the world?

If the suitors fail to answer correctly, they are beheaded by Chintamani. Thus, she earns the name Sahasra Siracheda Apoorva Chintamani, which means "the unique Chintamani who beheads a thousand".

The novel then introduces Prince Vijayaditya ( వ జ య ద త), the son of King Chandrasena ( చ ద ర స న) of Kanchi ( క చ). He is a brave and handsome man, who has learned various skills and sciences from his guru Vishwakarma ( వ శ ్ ్ ్ ్ ్ ్ ్ ్ ్ ్ ్ ్ ్ ్ ్ ్ ్ ్). He has two brothers, Vikramaditya and Udayaditya, who are also courageous and talented. One day, they hear about Chintamani's test and decide to participate in it. However, they are unaware of Mayasura's plot and Chintamani's vow.

Vikramaditya and Udayaditya go first and fail to answer Chintamani's questions. They are beheaded by her in front of Vijayaditya, who is shocked and enraged. He vows to avenge his brothers' deaths and expose Mayasura's evil scheme. He also falls in love with Chintamani at first sight and decides to win her heart. He challenges her to answer his questions before he answers hers. He asks her:

  • What is the most powerful thing in the world?

  • What is the most beautiful thing in the world?

  • What is the most valuable thing in the world?

Chintamani is unable to answer his questions and agrees to answer his questions after he answers hers. Vijayaditya then sets out to find the answers to her questions, with the help of Chintamani's sister, Chandrika ( చ ద ర క), who is also in love with him. He travels to three different kingdoms, where he meets various people and faces many dangers. He also learns about Mayasura's true identity and his plan to destroy the world. He finally finds the answers to Chintamani's questions, which are:

  • The most wonderful thing in the world is the human mind, which can create and destroy anything.

  • The most difficult thing in the world is to control one's senses, which can lead to either liberation or bondage.

  • The most precious thing in the world is love, which can overcome any obstacle and make one happy.

He returns to Ujjain and answers Chintamani's questions correctly. He also reveals Mayasura's evil plot and defeats him in a battle. He frees Chintamani from her vow and marries her with the consent of her parents. He also answers his own questions, which are:

  • The most powerful thing in the world is truth, which can never be defeated by falsehood.

  • The most beautiful thing in the world is virtue, which can adorn anyone with grace and dignity.

  • The most valuable thing in the world is knowledge, which can enlighten anyone with wisdom and clarity.

He then revives his brothers with the help of Vishwakarma and marries Chandrika to Vikramaditya and another princess named Madhavi ( మ ధ వ) to Udayaditya. He becomes the king of Ujjain and rules with justice and prosperity. He also builds a temple for Lord Shiva and worships him with devotion. The novel ends with a happy note, praising Vijayaditya as the ideal hero and Chintamani as the ideal heroine.
