  • Hurricane Laura: Hurricane Laura made landfall in Louisiana on Saturday, August 26, 2023, as a Category 4 storm with winds of 150 mph. It was one of the strongest hurricanes to hit the US Gulf Coast in history, causing widespread damage and power outages. At least 16 people were killed and hundreds of thousands were displaced by the storm. The hurricane also triggered a chemical fire at a plant near Lake Charles, Louisiana, that sent a plume of smoke into the air. President Joe Biden declared a major disaster in Louisiana and Texas and pledged federal aid to the affected areas.

  • MTV Video Music Awards: The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) were held on Sunday, August 27, 2023, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The show was hosted by comedian Kevin Hart and featured performances by Lady Gaga, BTS, The Weeknd, Miley Cyrus, and more. Lady Gaga won the most awards of the night, including Video of the Year for "Rain On Me" with Ariana Grande, Artist of the Year, and the first-ever Tricon Award for her achievements in music, fashion, and activism. BTS made history as the first Korean act to win Best Pop, Best Group, and Best K-pop for their song "Dynamite". The show also paid tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman, who died of colon cancer on Friday, August 25, 2023.

  • Black Lives Matter Protests: Black Lives Matter protests continued across the US and around the world on the last weekend of August 2023. The protests were sparked by the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old Black man who was shot seven times in the back by a white officer in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Sunday, August 20, 2023. Blake survived the shooting but was left paralyzed from the waist down. The shooting sparked outrage and violence in Kenosha and other cities, where protesters clashed with police and counter-protesters. On Tuesday, August 22, 2023, a 17-year-old gunman named Kyle Rittenhouse allegedly killed two protesters and wounded another in Kenosha. He was arrested and charged with homicide. On Friday, August 25, 2023, thousands of people gathered in Washington DC for the "Commitment March: Get Your Knee Off Our Necks", a rally organized by civil rights groups to mark the 57th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. The march called for racial justice and police reform in the wake of Blake's shooting and other cases of police brutality against Black people.
