Viva Life On Mars

Work on Hunky Dory began at Trident Studios, London, on 8 June 1971. "Life on Mars?" was recorded on 6 August, the final day of the sessions.[d][22] According to O'Leary, Bowie and co-producer Ken Scott considered the track to be "the Big One", and saved it for the end of the sessions.[8] In July that year, Defries sent a letter to jazz pianist Dudley Moore, asking him to play piano during a session. There is no evidence Moore replied; although the song on which Defries wanted Moore to play is unknown, biographer Kevin Cann said it was most likely "Life on Mars?".[23][24] Keyboardist, session musician and member of the Strawbs Rick Wakeman played piano on the track;[23] he had played Mellotron on Bowie's 1969 self-titled album.[25] In 1995, Wakeman said he met with Bowie in late June 1971 at Haddon Hall, where he heard demos of "Changes" and "Life on Mars?" in "their raw brilliance ... the finest selection of songs I have ever heard in one sitting in my entire life ... I couldn't wait to get into the studio and record them".[24] Wakeman played the same 1898 Bechstein piano that was used by The Beatles for "Hey Jude", and later by Queen for "Bohemian Rhapsody".[26] According to Wakeman; "I remember leaving [the studio] and saying to a couple of friends that I met that evening in a local pub that I'd just played on the best song that I'd ever had the privilege to work on".[5]

Viva Life On Mars

According to British radio station BBC Radio 2, "Life on Mars?" has "one of the strangest lyrics ever", consisting of a "slew of surreal images" like a Salvador Dalí painting.[6] Spitz said the song has a theme of optimism.[36] In the song, a "girl with mousy hair"[13] visits a cinema to escape from reality.[37][38] Sandford writes it "sets up a complex parallel world in which the cinema becomes life".[35] After the girl becomes "hooked to the silver screen",[39] Bowie uses an array of images that are typical of films,[37] naming Mickey Mouse, John Lennon, "Rule, Britannia!", Ibiza and the Norfolk Broads.[16]

The identity of the "girl with the mousy hair" has been debated. Some journalists and commentators have said the girl is Farthingale. According to Pegg, however, there is no evidence to support this claim. Farthingale has rejected this theory, telling Pegg: "I don't actually have mousy hair ... I wasn't a person who lived at home with my parents, and I didn't live a fantasy life in films. Nothing about me fits into any of the words."[16]

Although Bowie was fixated on becoming Ziggy Stardust at the time of its recording, "Life on Mars?" has no connection with the planet Mars; the title is a reference to the intense media coverage of the contemporaneous US-Soviet Union race to reach the planet. Doggett states the media interest inspired headlines around the world that asked "Is there life on Mars?"[41] According to Perone, the science fiction-influenced character Ziggy Stardust and his backing band The Spiders from Mars originated in the "fleeting image" of "Life on Mars?" and the "androgynous outcast" who is portrayed in Bowie's album The Man Who Sold the World (1970).[42]

The song has bean featured in several film soundtracks. The original soundtrack of the 1996 film Breaking the Waves features "Life on Mars?" during the epilogue, although for copyright reasons, the song was replaced by Elton John's "Your Song" on the international DVD release.[120] Seu Jorge recorded a Portuguese cover for the 2004 film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, while Bowie's original is included on the film's soundtrack album. "Life on Mars?" also appears in Loverboy (2005) and Hunky Dory (2012), and on the soundtrack of Factory Girl (2006).[117][121] The song also appears in the 2015 musical Lazarus, which was written by Bowie and playwright Enda Walsh near the end of Bowie's life. It is sung by the character Girl, who was played by Sophia Anne Caruso in the New York and London productions. For the musical, the song's arrangement was downplayed to avoid it becoming a Broadway "showstopper".[122] "Life on Mars?" also features in the soundtrack to the first trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson's 2021 film Licorice Pizza,[123] and in the film itself.[124]

Continuing to document new diagenetic features like the Blackthorn Salt is important because it could help researchers figure out when liquid water disappeared from Mars. "We can learn more about the complex and long-lived history of water at Mount Sharp," Fraeman said. This could reveal more information about how long the environment could have been potentially habitable to life, she added.

Mars wasn't always this inhospitable to life. We think Mars once had a molten core that generated a magnetic field. This, in turn, protected the surface from radiation and supported athicker atmosphere that kept the planet warm.

There is also strong evidencethat between 3 and 4 billion years ago,Mars had water on its surface. We cansee valleys carved by rivers, pebbles that formed in streams, and pilesof sediment that could have come from basins and deltas. Under these conditions, life could have been possible.

Every mission that lands on Mars must be thoroughly sterilized before it leaves Earth.Otherwise, instruments looking for signs of life might be fooled by lifethat came along with the spacecraft. Even worse, there is a slim but real possibilitythat Earthling microbes could survive and thrive on Mars, potentiallyinterfering with any lifeforms that might already exist there.

A discovery in 1996 made panspermia seem particularly possible. Scientists studying a Martian meteorite known as ALH84001 found what looked like microbial fossils similar to ones found on Earth. Most experts ultimately agreed that alternative explanations for the structures were possible and that the meteorite was not a definitive indication of life. Nevertheless, the discovery arguably yielded a positive side effect: public excitement spurred investment in Mars research that continues to yield amazing discoveries today.

We have not seen any definitive signs of life on Mars yet. On the other hand, we have not had the right kinds of equipment on landers and rovers to test directly for life. Some of the rocks we have been examining with the Curiosity and Opportunity rovers prove that Mars was warm and wet in the past and likely was habitable. Next, we will seek for signs of ancient life directly, probably using rovers in the 2020s.

We are intending to robotically explore Europa, one of the Galilean moons of Jupiter. The reason is that we have evidence from the Galileo orbiter around Europa that this moon has an ocean beneath a water ice crust. Maybe subsurface life exists. Currently, NASA is planning the Europa Clipper mission to fly close by Europa to make detailed measurements. And there is discussion of a Europa lander to sample the crust, where water and maybe some salts have recently come up through the subsurface oceans through fractures. Io is interesting but has lots of noxious gases and lots of active volcanoes.

Later at night, as Zoidberg returns to his dumpster the Robot Mafia is revealed to be waiting for him inside it, with Donbot asking for the money or Zoidberg's life, causing him to spit out the vodka he drank earlier in the casino. The Robot Mafia proceed to interrogate Zoidberg who claims that he has spent all the money on Mars Vegas as Clamps hits a book on his face. They then decide to believe in him and plan to murder and dispose him. As Clamps approaches for the kill Zoidberg gets frightened and splashes his ink all over, blinding his captors and allowing him to escape. In the Planet Express building, the crew is shown trying to recover their hangover from their weekend trip to Mars Vegas. The Professor asked where's his ship, to which Leela points to the roof where she apparently crashed the ship into. Fry then states he doesn't remember much, but he felt fine. Amy then points her mirror to Fry, to which it is revealed that tattoos are shown at Fry's left side of his face, with him exclaiming that Amy's mirror is the one who got the tattoos. The Professor then states that he's prepared for this eventuality, while starting up his tattoo removal laser, which the Professor describing it as a "translucidating ink polarizer".

Okay, fine. So the special titles were spoiled a few months ago when Comedy Central first started promoting this season but they're still excellent and looked even better on my television. Plus, I could actually hear the hilarious home-made sound effects, something I didn't really notice when it first went online. After the welcome display of artistry shook up the opening sequence, "Vegas" began proper and as any good mafia story should, with a heist, uh, cross-cut with a group of employees at a delivery service discussing a vacation. The Robot Mafia, one of the best group of recurring characters, is knocking over a 'Binks' armoured space vehicle and apparently yousa money is not safe with the Jar Jar run security company. While the Donbot brags about the eight million De Niros they just lifted, Amy 'saves' the Planet Express from sitting around on stupid old Earth by proposing a trip to her parents casino on Mars. But it's probably not the best place for the impulsive (and poor) Zoidberg and his life-savings of pennies. Poor! 041b061a72
